When you randomly wander the Internet like I do, you occasionally stumble across things that not only make you go “hmmm”, you risk finding things that make you go “Lord, what are these people thinking?” One example: this video by Lyall Coburn called “Scary Beautiful”…
Apparently a designer named Rene van den Berg and an artist named Leanie van der Vyver came up with this design for women’s shoes, called “vertical shoes“, in order to prove some point or other about women’s fashion. It looks to me like they were interested in how much pain they could persuade a model to put up with.
The videographer Lyall Coburn says in the commentary on her video page “Humans are playing God by physically and metaphorically perfecting themselves. Beauty is currently at an all time climax, allowing this project to explore what lies beyond perfection.
Scary Beautiful challenges current beauty ideals by inflicting an unexpected new beauty standard.”
There’s a Time Magazine blog article about this, but it just sounds like more smoke blown to excuse this “creation.” I remember reading about how the Chinese would bind the feet of young girls in order to force them to take “dainty small steps” by crippling them. This is no different, and if they ever do make these for women, well I feel sorry for any girl who ends up messed up by them. If there was any proof that fashion designers hate women, this has got to be Exhibit A.
Normally I’d say “Enjoy!” here, but watching this is just too painful. I sure hope they paid the model really well, because she’s going to have medical bills from this.
