A brief history of my birthday trip to Japan in July-August of 2018. It was my 60th birthday, which in Japan is called “kanreki”, which refers to the end of the 12-year, 5-element cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The idea is that once one has completed the cycle, one per birth year, then you start over as a “newborn”, and it’s celebrated as if you are a brand new child. It’s kind of amusing, and I never thought that I’d ever get to 60, back when I was young.
