I stumbled across this wicked little gem of an animation by a young animator named Junaid Chundrigar. He has a fantastic comic style, and he really skewers the biggest Marvel superheroes in this short. Some of the things he shows the characters doing, you just know that’s exactly what would happen if they weren’t in comic books!
From his blog, he’s working as a professional animator on a couple of projects, and I have no doubt we’re going to see great things from this young man! Check out the video (and look for the cameo by Stan the Man!):

This was my Mom, Delphy Diseker. It’s the 15th Mother’s Day since she passed away, and I felt like making a small tribute to her here.

Delphy Jane Hill was born in November, 1916.
She was the youngest child of Andrew Johnson and Anna Lexonia Hill.
Andrew was a coal miner,
and so Mom grew up in the coal mining camps of eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.
She was a shy girl,
but she grew into a very headstrong woman.
My uncle Earl once said of her that “she would argue with a fencepost,” she was that strong-willed.
It must have been one of the things that attracted my Dad to her, since he was just about as determined and strong-willed too. Mom and Dad married in 1935, at the height of the Great Depression, but Dad never found a job he didn’t want to do, although coal mining was his first joy. Mom worked hard both at home, ...

Good grief, where the heck have I been that I haven’t seen this? Oh, yeah, I keep forgetting to watch TV lately, so things like this “Super Best Friends Forever” thing goes on the air behind my back. It’s a conspiracy, I tells ya!
So, apparently this is a series of comedy shorts about three of the “girls” of the DC comic universe, Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Girl, who are the “Super Best Friends” of the title. The shorts air as part of the “DC Nation” series on Cartoon Network. Other shorts apparently are centered on other characters from DC comics, like the Teen Titans, Animal Man, Plastic Man and others.
In “SBFF” the three girls get into adventures like all superheroes do, but this is a comedy, so the humor takes precedence. I found the show through this short, where Kara (Supergirl) is staying with her cousin ...

And now another thrilling installment of my webcomic reviews! Caution, there be spoilers here, best if you read the comic archive first…
I’ve always had a soft spot for Westerns, but I’ve also always had a special place for fantasy and science fiction stories. So, when I happen upon another web comic that turns out to be a Western with elements of fantasy, and has a cute, spunky girl as the main character to boot, well I’m sold! ”Plume” is the name of this comic, which is named for a quote from the main character’s father: “Revenge is like a plume of black smoke…” The artist/creator, K. Lynn Smith, has a very cinematic eye and can create both beautiful action and still images for the comic. Her characters are visually distinctive, and she captures emotions both subtle and manic, even using a limited palette of colors. She has a special knack ...

Here are some pictures to give a feel for the kinds of things that went on at the annual Washington DC Cherry Blossom Street Festival (a “sakura matsuri”, “桜祭り” in Japanese). This year’s matsuri was in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry trees from the people of Japan to the people of the US, in 1912. This year the DC and Federal governments went all out, this festival was larger than any I’ve been to, and very well organized. There were cosplayers (people dressed in costumes of their favorite anime or video game characters), many people in traditional kimono or other dress, and many musical acts, especially the taiko drummers.
Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting my camera to take good pictures, and so this collection is the best of the shoot. I know why they call it a “shoot” now, since that’s all I was ...

About a year ago I was doing my usual roaming through my usual webcomic haunts when I saw an intriguing ad for a new webcomic. As is my want, I followed the ad link to a webcomic called “Next Town Over“, which turned out to be a comic with a Western setting, but with fascinating elements of magic use and of the strange pseudo-19th Century “might-have-been” technology called “steampunk.”
The creator of this comic is Erin Mehlos, who has a masterful grasp of the Western genre, including some right-natural dialog from the characters! It’s obvious that this comic is a labor of love, from a fan of Westerns to others of like mind, but she also adds her own spice to the story by introducing non-traditional elements. If anyone reading this is old enough to remember, I’d say the comic is very much like the 60′s TV show “The Wild, Wild ...

This site by Frank J. Fleming already skewered politics with fantastically funny satire, but he’s in hog (dog?) heaven with this latest.
